This is a 3 star hotel within 5 or 10 minutes’ drive of Birmingham Airport.  It has a restaurant and meeting room and does long term parking deals.  In April 2010 we compiled guest reviews from the internet and worked out that it was getting very good ratings of about 4 out of 5 on average.

Location

The Premier Inn is a mile from Birmingham International Airport and it takes 5 to 10 minutes to drive there.  It’s in the grounds of the National Exhibition Centre.

Parking

Parking is free for guests overnight.  Park and fly packages are on offer, with a night’s accommodation for up to 2 adults and 2 children and long term parking starting from £85 (April 2010).  It also includes a Grab & Go breakfast in the morning.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is at 2 pm and check-out is at midday.  There is a hot buffet style breakfast available from 6.30 am until 10 am and a Grab & Go option for those in a rush to make their plane.

Shuttle bus

There’s no shuttle bus and a taxi to the airport will cost about £6.

Hotel facilities

There’s a restaurant at the Premier Inn which serves 3 meals a day and has options for younger guests.  You can book a meal deal with your room, which includes a 2 course dinner from a special menu, a drink of your choice and an all you can eat hot and cold breakfast.  Prices start at £76 for this (April 2010).  The hotel also has a bar and a meeting room which can hold up to 20 delegates.  There’s a Costa Coffee Shop in the building and guests can take a stroll in the gardens.

Guest rooms

There are 247 rooms altogether – a combination of double, twin and family rooms.  They are all air-conditioned and have a shower room with toiletries, a flat screen TV, hairdryer and tea and coffee tray.  They also have WiFi access, so if you need to check your emails you can, but there’s a charge to use this.

Accessibility

The Premier Inn has blue badge parking spaces and the building is fully accessible.  There are hearing loops and vibrating fire alarms available.  Guests can book an accessible room with wet room.

Directions

From the M42 motorway, exit at Junction 6 signposted for the NEC. Follow the signs in to the NEC complex and take the first right onto South Way. The hotel is fully signposted and found at the fifth roundabout.  Birmingham International is the nearest railway station.

Overview

This is a 4 star bed and breakfast near Birmingham Airport.  It has a garden and guest lounge and all the bedrooms have their own bath or shower room.  It gets very good guest reviews online, with most giving it a rating of 4 out of 5.

Location

The Black Firs Guest House is in a village location about a mile and a half from the airport.  It’s within walking distance of Birmingham Business Park so ideal for anyone attending a meeting there.

Parking

There is room for guests to park in the paved driveway area in front of the house whilst they are staying at the guest house.   There’s no long term parking thoug, so you’d have to book the car into one of the official airport car parks.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is at 4 pm and check-out is by 10 am.  A full English or Continental Breakfast is served between 7.30 am and 9 am.

Shuttle bus

There are no airport transfers provided by Black Firs Guest House.  A taxi to the terminal building will cost about £6 or £7.

Hotel facilities

The house has a big back garden and patio area.  There’s also a breakfast room and a lounge where guests can hang out or watch TV.  The owners can advise you on good local restaurants for an evening meal.

Guest rooms

Double and single rooms are available – 8 in total. They’re all individually decorated and each has its own bath or shower room, although not all of them are en suite.  The rooms come with a TV and tea and coffee tray and they can lend you an iron if your clothes have got a bit crumpled in your suitcase.  There’s a complimentary WiFi connection for guests.

Accessibility

Unfortunately there aren’t any adaptations for disabled guests.

For those arriving by car – exit the M6 at Junction 4 and take the A446 North towards Lichfield and Coleshill. Take the 1st left off the dual carriageway island, signposted for the NEC (this is only 200 yards from the motorway island). Continue along this road where you will approach another island and go straight over it. Then take the 2nd turning on your right. Black Firs is signposted approximately 100 yards on the right.  The nearest train station is Birmingham International.

This is off-site airport accommodation so it doesn’t have any views of the runways.

Overview

This is an independent 3 star hotel near Birmingham Airport.  It has a restaurant and a leisure centre which is free for guests to use, as well as lots of flexible spaces for holding business meetings. At the moment there aren’t any reviews online so we can’t give it a guest rating but as soon as we have the info we’ll let you know (April 2010).

The Arden Hotel is within a mile of Birmingham International Airport and is set in landscaped gardens.

Parking

There is a large car park with 350 spaces which is free for guests to use.  They offer 14 day airport parking packages and longer stays can be arranged.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is at 1 pm and check-out at 11 am.  A Full English or Continental Breakfast is served in the restaurant from 7 am until 10 am.

Shuttle bus

There’s no shuttle bus to the airport but reception can call you a taxi.  It’ll cost about £6.

Hotel facilities

If you’ve got a bit of time to kill before your flight you can start your holiday early with some rest and relaxation in the hotel’s health and leisure complex, which is free for guests to use. It has a swimming pool, solarium, Jacuzzi and steam room as well as a gym.  You can also pass the time in the snooker room, which has 2 full size snooker and pool tables.  The Arden Hotel restaurant is open all day and has a continental menu.  If you don’t want a big meal, you can also buy a sandwich in the lounge bar.  There are 9 different meeting rooms and suites which can be booked for conferences and other events.  The largest one takes 170 people theatre-style. There’s WiFi access throughout the building, but there’s a charge to use it.

There are 216 en suite guest rooms.  Single, twin or double beds are available and all rooms have a TV and radio.  Lots of them have a view of the landscaped gardens and waterfall, which is unusual for an airport hotel!  WiFi internet is on offer but you have to pay to connect.

Accessibility

There are 6 disabled access parking spaces at the Arden Hotel.  The bar and restaurant are fully accessible, as are the meeting rooms. Assistance dogs are welcome and evacuation ski pads are available in an emergency.  Accessible bedrooms have been designed with appropriate turning circles and low level facilities.

Directions

Drivers coming on the M42 from the South should take the exit at Junction 6 signposted for Birmingham Airport.  Carry on along the A45 towards Birmingham and take the first left hand turn.  As you filter off the A45 you need to get into the right hand lane of the slip road (do not fork left onto the fly over).  Then continue on to the island and follow the island around, taking the 4th exit back onto the A45.  After this you will see an Esso petrol station on the left hand side.  The entrance to the Arden Hotel is just after it. When leaving the M42 from the North, exit at junction 6 onto the island and take the 3rd exit heading towards Birmingham Airport.  Join the A45 towards Birmingham and follow the previous directions from there.  The nearest train station is Birmingham International.

This 4 star hotel is close to Birmingham Airport and the National Exhibition Centre.  It’s a large, modern building with a bar, restaurant and meeting rooms and well-equipped guest bedrooms. Travellers have been reviewing it online and give it a very good rating of 4 out of 5 (April 2010).

The Crowne Plaza overlooks a lake.  It’s 5 minutes’ drive from Birmingham International Airport.

Parking

Overnight parking is free for guests and there are long term parking packages available at a cost.  The car park has controlled access gates and floodlights for your peace of mind.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out is at noon, but if you need a late check-out (maybe a little lie in after a long trip?) this can be arranged.  A Full English Breakfast is available from 6 am to 10 am on weekdays and 7 am to 11.30 am at the weekend, so you can have a leisurely brunch as long as you haven’t got a plane to catch!

Shuttle bus

There’s a hotel shuttle bus which takes you to Birmingham International Train Station for free.  From there you can take the free 90 second monorail to the airport.  Otherwise, if you pay a pound, the shuttle can drop you right at the terminal building.  The bus runs to the airport every half an hour from 6 am until 10 pm.  You can be picked up at the airport on request; just call the hotel when you are ready to depart.  A taxi between the airport and the hotel costs about £7 (April 2010).  The journey takes 5 minutes.

Hotel facilities

The Crowne Plaza has a bar and a restaurant that overlooks a lake, serving 3 meals a day.  There’s a children’s menu and kids eat for free – great for keeping down the cost of a family holiday.  There are 11 meeting rooms which can be the venue for business events and the largest one holds 250 reception style.  They’re fully stocked with audio-visual equipment.  WiFi internet access is available in the bar, restaurant and meeting rooms, but you have to pay £15.99 to use it (April 2010).  The business centre is staffed between 8 am and 4 pm with copying and faxing services.  There’s a small gym in the building and a sauna.

Guest rooms

The Crowne Plaza has 242 air-conditioned guest rooms.  Connecting rooms are available for families and cots can be put in on request.  There is a telephone and a cable TV which shows pay movies and video games, so you should be able to keep everyone entertained.  There’s also tea, coffee and a mini bar as well as an iron, trouser press and a safe for valuables.  Guests choosing to stay in an executive room will have a little bit more luxury with extras such as a turndown service and bathrobes.  Suites have all this plus a separate sitting room, dining table and CD player.  There is a wireless internet connection in all the rooms but there’s a charge of £15.99 to use it (April 2010).  Room service is available 24 hours a day.

Accessibility

Assistance dogs are welcome in the Crowne Plaza.  There are blue badge parking spaces and 12 accessible guest rooms.  All the public areas of the hotel are accessible to wheelchair users.  There is a hearing loop at reception for hearing aid users.

For those arriving by road, exit the M42 at junction 6. At the roundabout follow the directions for the NEC. Take the second exit on the left, which is signposted South Way. Go down this road for 50 metres and you’ll find the Crowne Plaza Hotel on your right-hand side.   The nearest train station is Birmingham International.

Airport views

This isn’t the right place for planespotters hoping to catch a glimpse of some aircraft outside the window.  The Crowne Plaza overlooks a lake near the National Exhibition Centre.

Overview

This is a 2 star hotel, part of the Accor hotel group, which is 2 minutes’ walk from the terminals at Birmingham International Airport.  It has a café serving evening meals and a 24 hour bar.  We checked for reviews online in April 2010 but couldn’t find any, so we can’t give it a guest rating at the moment, but we’ll keep an eye out and let you know.

Location

The Ibis is on-site at Birmingham Airport, 300 metres from the terminals, so just a 2 minute walk to check-in for your flight.

Parking

The hotel doesn’t have its own car park but as a guest you can get discounted rates at all the airport’s NCP car parks.  There’s one just across the road which guests can use for a charge.  Long stay car parks are also available.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in and check-out is at midday, however rooms can be made available before these times and you can extend the check-out time until 2 pm at the latest if need be.  For early risers, breakfast starts at 4 am with pastries, cookies and hot and cold drinks.  At 6.30 am the all-you-can-eat continental breakfast buffet begins.  It finishes at 10 am but late risers can still get hot drinks, fruit juices and various snacks until midday.

Shuttle bus

There are shuttle buses to the airport car parks, which are free and run 24 hours  a day.  There’s no need for a shuttle bus to the terminal as it is just a 2 minute walk from the Ibis.

There’s a café that serves meals, snacks and drinks.  It’s open in the evening from 6 pm and 10 pm.  There’s also a 24 hour bar that has hot snacks on offer.  Guests can use the wireless internet but there is a charge for this.  There is also a self service business centre.  There is WiFi internet access which costs between £2.99 and £10.99 depending on what package you need.

There are 160 rooms at the Ibis.  They’re all en suite and some have air conditioning.  There are double rooms; there are are also 2 family rooms which have a pull out bed and a double bed and there are twin rooms which have 2 single beds.  There is WiFi internet in the rooms but this will cost between £2.99 and £10.99 depending on which package you choose.  There’s also a TV with additional movies, sports and news channels so you’re bound to be able to find something to watch, no matter who you’re travelling with.

Accessibility

There are 8 accessible rooms at the hotel.  There are ramps to allow wheelchair access to the building.  The Ibis also has hearing loops and vibrating alarms for the hard of hearing and accessible toilets.

When driving, exit the M42 at junction 6 (A45). Follow the signs for Birmingham Airport. Keep going into the airport grounds, and bear right at rapid drop off. After that go left into Ambassador Road. The Ibis Hotel is on the left, opposite car park (NCP) number 2.  The nearest train station is Birmingham International, from where you can take the free 90 second monorail to the airport terminal.  The hotel is 2 minutes’ walk from the terminal.

The Holiday Inn is a mile and a half from Birmingham International Airport.  It takes about 10 minutes to drive there.

Parking

There is a car park on-site which is free for guests to use whilst resident at the hotel.  You can book a Park and Go package including a night’s accommodation, car parking for up to 15 days and airport transfers.  The car may be kept on or off-site, but the hotel does not take responsibility for the security of the off-site car park.

Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out is at noon.  A Full English Breakfast is available from 6.30 am until 10 am.

There’s a shuttle bus to the airport, which takes 10 minutes.  The shuttle costs £2 per person one way and runs from 5 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 10 pm.  A taxi would cost £5 one way (April 2010).

Hotel facilities

If you need photocopying, fax or secretarial services, ask at reception.  There’s wireless internet access in the lobby, but it costs £7.20 (April 2010).  There are 6 meeting rooms and the largest one can take 600 people theatre-style.  The hotel has a bar serving light meals and fine dining restaurant headed up by the award-winning chef Marcus Renzi.  Those travelling with children will be happy to hear that kids eat for free here! There’s also health and fitness centre being built on-site where you will be able to burn off those calories if you really want to!  It will have a gym and swimming pool and they hope to open it in May 2010.

There are 138 rooms altogether spread over 3 floors.  Double, single, family and connecting rooms are available.  They’re all air conditioned and have cable TV, on demand movies and Playstation.  There’s wired internet access but there’s a charge to connect (£5 in April 2010).   You have a choice of no less than 5 pillows on which to rest your head.  The rooms also have hairdryers and trouser presses, a minibar and hot drinks tray. If you need something a bit more substantial, room service is on offer 24 hours a day.  Executive rooms have more luxurious fabrics and furniture, with marble and chrome bathrooms and underfloor heating.  They also have a remote sound system and an LCD TV.  Suites are the most spacious accommodation at the Holiday Inn.

Accessibility

Service animals are welcome at the Holiday Inn.  There are 2 accessible rooms.  These have wider doors, bigger bathrooms and lower fixtures and fittings such as light switches.  There are panel grab rails by the toilet and emergency buttons in there and next to the bed.  The public areas of the hotel are fully accessible to wheelchair users.

The 3 star Ramada Encore is within walking distance of Birmingham Airport.  It’s a female-friendly hotel and can make special arrangements for the security and comfort of lone lady guests, such as sending someone to meet them at the train station.  It has a restaurant and bar and meeting rooms are available.  We’ve checked out guest reviews on the internet and can report that it gets average ratings of 3 out of 5 (April 2010).

The Ramada is located between the airport, the railway station and the National Exhibiton Centre.  It’s a 5 minute walk from the train station, where you can catch the monorail to the terminal, or an 8-10 minute walk from the terminal, but you have to cross through a tunnel under the road.

Parking

The hotel has a private car park that is covered by CCTV.  Parking is free whilst you stay there and there are park and fly packages starting at £69 for a night’s accommodation and 15 days’ parking (April 2010).

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is at 2 pm and check-out is at midday.  A cooked and continental breakfast is served from 7 am until 10 am during the week and half an hour later on weekends.

Shuttle bus

The Ramada doesn’t run a shuttle bus.  You can walk to the train station in 5 minutes and catch the free monorail to the airport.  Walking all the way to the terminal takes about 8-10 minutes, up the main road and through an underpass.  Alternatively, a taxi will cost about £5 or £6.

Hotel facilities

There is a combined lounge, bar and restaurant, which is open til 10 pm and serves 3 meals a day.  If you arrive very late and hungry you can always order room service, which is available at all hours.  There are 8 meeting rooms for business events and all of them have natural daylight and audio-visual facilities. The largest one can accommodate 40 people theatre-style.  Guests and delegates can surf the net to their heart’s content, making use of the free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

The Ramada has 166 guest bedrooms.  You can have a double or a twin and some rooms have extra sofabeds.  They’re all decorated in a modern style, with wooden floorboards and glass tiled bathrooms, featuring a power shower to blast the cobwebs away in the morning.  Each has a radio, an LCD TV with 16 channels and free Wi-Fi internet access. There’s also a work area in each room and a phone which gives you an hour of free landline calls within the UK.  The windows are fitted with black-out blinds so you can get some sleep even if you’re operating in a different time zone, and a hairdryer and hot drinks are also provided.  Room service is available 24 hours a day if you need a bite to eat.

Accessibility

There are accessible rooms with a 1500mm turning circle.  These have level access showers with grab rails and shower seat.  There’s also an emergency pull cord in the en suite and an emergency call button beside the bed.  If the hotel’s fire alarm is activated, a strobe light on the ceiling will start to flash.  Fixtures and fittings such as the spyhole and light switches have been set at a low height for easy use.  There are blue badge parking spaces outside and all public areas of the building are wheelchair accessible.

Directions

If you’re coming by car from the South, take the M40 North and get onto the M42. From the North, take the M6 South and from there join the M42. Leave the M42 at Junction 6. Go onto the A45, signposted for the NEC, Airport, Station, Birmingham and Coventry. Take the A45 exit towards Birmingham. Bear left and take the first left towards Airport and Station. Take the 3rd exit onto Bickenhill Lane, towards Airport and Station. At the next roundabout take the first left, signposted for the Airport and NEC Parking. You will then come to another roundabout.  This time you need to take the second exit following Bickenhill Lane towards Elmdon Trading Estate. At the next roundabout take the third exit and you will see the Ramada Encore on your right.  For those coming by public transport, Birmingham Airport Railway Station is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

Location

This hotel is 10 minutes’ drive from Birmingham Airport.  It’s on the site of the NEC.

Parking

The hotel’s car park has won the “Safe Park” award for its security.  It has 700 spaces and costs £7 for an overnight stay.  The Hilton offers park and fly deals for travellers out of Birmingham Airport.

Check-in/out times and breakfast

Check-in time is 3 pm and check-out is at 12 noon.  If you need a late check-out, give reception a ring before 10 am on your departure day.  You can use the Express Check-out service if you give your credit card details in on arrival.  Guests staying in Executive Rooms and Suites have their own private check-out desk.  A Full English Breakfast is served during the week from 6.30 am to 10.30 am and at the weekend from 7 am to 11 am.

There’s a shuttle bus which runs to and from the airport train station, from where you can catch the free monorail to the terminal building.  It leavels on the hour and the half hour, 24 hours a day.  When guests arrive at the station and would like to be picked up, they should use the courtesy phones to let the hotel know they are waiting.

Hotel facilities

This is one of the UK’s largest conference hotels.  There are 33 meeting rooms and the biggest suite can hold up to 2000 delegates.  There is also a business centre and wireless internet in the public areas of the building (but be aware that there is a charge for this).  The hotel has 3 restaurants with varied international menus and a bar, so there are plenty of options for dining and drinking (you’re on holiday – why not treat yourself?)  The restaurants are family friendly with children’s menus and high chairs. For exercise and relaxation, the Hilton has a health club with gym, swimming pool and jacuzzi.  There’s also a sauna and steam room and you can complete the pampering with a massage.  Reception and the Concierge are on duty 24 hours a day to help you out with anything else you might need.

Guest rooms

This is a huge hotel with 790 rooms altogether.   You can choose from a standard guest room, deluxe room, executive room, suite or family room.  There are single and twin guest rooms available at the standard level.  Even these have floor to ceiling windows and a full en suite with bath and shower.  They come with a hairdryer and iron and tea and coffee making facilities.  You can kick back and relax in front of the cable TV and be entertained by the movies or video game.  Some of the guest rooms have views of the lake.  Deluxe rooms are 21 metres square and has a separate area for working. They have a few additional facilities like a trouser press and are available as a Queen or Twin.

Executive rooms are even bigger – 24 metres square, with a separate seating area and a bigger, flashier TV.  Staying in one of these also grants you access to the Executive Lounge, where you can pick up free drinks and refreshments. The Suites are of course the most luxurious options, with 66 metres of space, including a separate dining area and extra touches like bathrobes and refrigerators.  Family rooms are 23 metres square with a separate seating area.  They have a queen size bed and rollaway beds suitable for 2 small children. Cots can be put into the rooms if necessary.  Children under 5 sharing with 2 adults can stay and eat at the Hilton absolutely free.  Children between 5 and 15 get free accommodation in their parents’ room, although their meals are charged.  Any child 15 or under staying in his or her own room gets 50% off the room rate.   There’s internet access in all rooms except single rooms.  The rooms on the ground floor have WiFi access, which is charged at £10 for 24 hours.  The other rooms have wired broadband access, which costs £15 for 24 hours (May 2010).

Accessibility

There are accessible bedrooms at the Hilton with lower fixtures and fittings.  All public areas of the hotel such as the restaurant and bar are wheelchair accessible.  There are blue badge parking spaces outside.

Directions

If you’re coming by car from the M42 Southbound, exit at junction 6 and bear left at the fork in the road. At the roundabout take the first exit onto Eastway. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Pendigo Way. When you come to another roundabout take the first exit onto Harbet Drive and you will have arrived at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. If you’re coming Northbound on the M42, exit at junction 6 and bear right as the road forks. At the following 3 roundabouts take the second exit onto South way, turn right onto Pendigo Way and then take the first exit onto Harbet Drive, where you will find the hotel.

Airport views

There aren’t any views of the airport from the Hilton, which is an off-site hotel.
