Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out is at noon, but if you need a late check-out (maybe a little lie in after a long trip?) this can be arranged.  A Full English Breakfast is available from 6 am to 10 am on weekdays and 7 am to 11.30 am at the weekend, so you can have a leisurely brunch as long as you haven’t got a plane to catch!

Shuttle bus

There’s a hotel shuttle bus which takes you to Birmingham International Train Station for free.  From there you can take the free 90 second monorail to the airport.  Otherwise, if you pay a pound, the shuttle can drop you right at the terminal building.  The bus runs to the airport every half an hour from 6 am until 10 pm.  You can be picked up at the airport on request; just call the hotel when you are ready to depart.  A taxi between the airport and the hotel costs about £7 (April 2010).  The journey takes 5 minutes.

Hotel facilities

The Crowne Plaza has a bar and a restaurant that overlooks a lake, serving 3 meals a day.  There’s a children’s menu and kids eat for free – great for keeping down the cost of a family holiday.  There are 11 meeting rooms which can be the venue for business events and the largest one holds 250 reception style.  They’re fully stocked with audio-visual equipment.  WiFi internet access is available in the bar, restaurant and meeting rooms, but you have to pay £15.99 to use it (April 2010).  The business centre is staffed between 8 am and 4 pm with copying and faxing services.  There’s a small gym in the building and a sauna.

Guest rooms

The Crowne Plaza has 242 air-conditioned guest rooms.  Connecting rooms are available for families and cots can be put in on request.  There is a telephone and a cable TV which shows pay movies and video games, so you should be able to keep everyone entertained.  There’s also tea, coffee and a mini bar as well as an iron, trouser press and a safe for valuables.  Guests choosing to stay in an executive room will have a little bit more luxury with extras such as a turndown service and bathrobes.  Suites have all this plus a separate sitting room, dining table and CD player.  There is a wireless internet connection in all the rooms but there’s a charge of £15.99 to use it (April 2010).  Room service is available 24 hours a day.

Assistance dogs are welcome in the Crowne Plaza.  There are blue badge parking spaces and 12 accessible guest rooms.  All the public areas of the hotel are accessible to wheelchair users.  There is a hearing loop at reception for hearing aid users.

For those arriving by road, exit the M42 at junction 6. At the roundabout follow the directions for the NEC. Take the second exit on the left, which is signposted South Way. Go down this road for 50 metres and you’ll find the Crowne Plaza Hotel on your right-hand side.   The nearest train station is Birmingham International.

Airport views

This isn’t the right place for planespotters hoping to catch a glimpse of some aircraft outside the window.  The Crowne Plaza overlooks a lake near the National Exhibition Centre.
