The 3 star Ramada Encore is within walking distance of Birmingham Airport.  It’s a female-friendly hotel and can make special arrangements for the security and comfort of lone lady guests, such as sending someone to meet them at the train station.  It has a restaurant and bar and meeting rooms are available.  We’ve checked out guest reviews on the internet and can report that it gets average ratings of 3 out of 5 (April 2010).

The Ramada is located between the airport, the railway station and the National Exhibiton Centre.  It’s a 5 minute walk from the train station, where you can catch the monorail to the terminal, or an 8-10 minute walk from the terminal, but you have to cross through a tunnel under the road.

The hotel has a private car park that is covered by CCTV.  Parking is free whilst you stay there and there are park and fly packages starting at £69 for a night’s accommodation and 15 days’ parking (April 2010).

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is at 2 pm and check-out is at midday.  A cooked and continental breakfast is served from 7 am until 10 am during the week and half an hour later on weekends.

Shuttle bus

The Ramada doesn’t run a shuttle bus.  You can walk to the train station in 5 minutes and catch the free monorail to the airport.  Walking all the way to the terminal takes about 8-10 minutes, up the main road and through an underpass.  Alternatively, a taxi will cost about £5 or £6.

Hotel facilities

There is a combined lounge, bar and restaurant, which is open til 10 pm and serves 3 meals a day.  If you arrive very late and hungry you can always order room service, which is available at all hours.  There are 8 meeting rooms for business events and all of them have natural daylight and audio-visual facilities. The largest one can accommodate 40 people theatre-style.  Guests and delegates can surf the net to their heart’s content, making use of the free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

Guest rooms

The Ramada has 166 guest bedrooms.  You can have a double or a twin and some rooms have extra sofabeds.  They’re all decorated in a modern style, with wooden floorboards and glass tiled bathrooms, featuring a power shower to blast the cobwebs away in the morning.  Each has a radio, an LCD TV with 16 channels and free Wi-Fi internet access. There’s also a work area in each room and a phone which gives you an hour of free landline calls within the UK.  The windows are fitted with black-out blinds so you can get some sleep even if you’re operating in a different time zone, and a hairdryer and hot drinks are also provided.  Room service is available 24 hours a day if you need a bite to eat.

There are accessible rooms with a 1500mm turning circle.  These have level access showers with grab rails and shower seat.  There’s also an emergency pull cord in the en suite and an emergency call button beside the bed.  If the hotel’s fire alarm is activated, a strobe light on the ceiling will start to flash.  Fixtures and fittings such as the spyhole and light switches have been set at a low height for easy use.  There are blue badge parking spaces outside and all public areas of the building are wheelchair accessible.
