Overview

This is an independent 3 star hotel near Birmingham Airport.  It has a restaurant and a leisure centre which is free for guests to use, as well as lots of flexible spaces for holding business meetings. At the moment there aren’t any reviews online so we can’t give it a guest rating but as soon as we have the info we’ll let you know (April 2010).

Location

The Arden Hotel is within a mile of Birmingham International Airport and is set in landscaped gardens.

Parking

There is a large car park with 350 spaces which is free for guests to use.  They offer 14 day airport parking packages and longer stays can be arranged.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is at 1 pm and check-out at 11 am.  A Full English or Continental Breakfast is served in the restaurant from 7 am until 10 am.

Shuttle bus

There’s no shuttle bus to the airport but reception can call you a taxi.  It’ll cost about £6.

Hotel facilities

If you’ve got a bit of time to kill before your flight you can start your holiday early with some rest and relaxation in the hotel’s health and leisure complex, which is free for guests to use. It has a swimming pool, solarium, Jacuzzi and steam room as well as a gym.  You can also pass the time in the snooker room, which has 2 full size snooker and pool tables.  The Arden Hotel restaurant is open all day and has a continental menu.  If you don’t want a big meal, you can also buy a sandwich in the lounge bar.  There are 9 different meeting rooms and suites which can be booked for conferences and other events.  The largest one takes 170 people theatre-style. There’s WiFi access throughout the building, but there’s a charge to use it.

Guest rooms

There are 216 en suite guest rooms.  Single, twin or double beds are available and all rooms have a TV and radio.  Lots of them have a view of the landscaped gardens and waterfall, which is unusual for an airport hotel!  WiFi internet is on offer but you have to pay to connect.

Accessibility

There are 6 disabled access parking spaces at the Arden Hotel.  The bar and restaurant are fully accessible, as are the meeting rooms. Assistance dogs are welcome and evacuation ski pads are available in an emergency.  Accessible bedrooms have been designed with appropriate turning circles and low level facilities.

Directions

Drivers coming on the M42 from the South should take the exit at Junction 6 signposted for Birmingham Airport.  Carry on along the A45 towards Birmingham and take the first left hand turn.  As you filter off the A45 you need to get into the right hand lane of the slip road (do not fork left onto the fly over).  Then continue on to the island and follow the island around, taking the 4th exit back onto the A45.  After this you will see an Esso petrol station on the left hand side.  The entrance to the Arden Hotel is just after it. When leaving the M42 from the North, exit at junction 6 onto the island and take the 3rd exit heading towards Birmingham Airport.  Join the A45 towards Birmingham and follow the previous directions from there.  The nearest train station is Birmingham International.

Overview

This is a 4 star hotel overlooking a lake in the grounds of the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) near Birmingham Airport.  It has 3 restaurants, a health club and extensive conference facilities.  We checked the internet to see what guests were saying about it in April 2010, and we found that it was getting very good ratings – about 4 out of 5 on average.

Location

This hotel is 10 minutes’ drive from Birmingham Airport.  It’s on the site of the NEC.

Parking

The hotel’s car park has won the “Safe Park” award for its security.  It has 700 spaces and costs £7 for an overnight stay.  The Hilton offers park and fly deals for travellers out of Birmingham Airport.

Check-in/out times and breakfast

Check-in time is 3 pm and check-out is at 12 noon.  If you need a late check-out, give reception a ring before 10 am on your departure day.  You can use the Express Check-out service if you give your credit card details in on arrival.  Guests staying in Executive Rooms and Suites have their own private check-out desk.  A Full English Breakfast is served during the week from 6.30 am to 10.30 am and at the weekend from 7 am to 11 am.

Shuttle bus

There’s a shuttle bus which runs to and from the airport train station, from where you can catch the free monorail to the terminal building.  It leavels on the hour and the half hour, 24 hours a day.  When guests arrive at the station and would like to be picked up, they should use the courtesy phones to let the hotel know they are waiting.

Hotel facilities

This is one of the UK’s largest conference hotels.  There are 33 meeting rooms and the biggest suite can hold up to 2000 delegates.  There is also a business centre and wireless internet in the public areas of the building (but be aware that there is a charge for this).  The hotel has 3 restaurants with varied international menus and a bar, so there are plenty of options for dining and drinking (you’re on holiday – why not treat yourself?)  The restaurants are family friendly with children’s menus and high chairs. For exercise and relaxation, the Hilton has a health club with gym, swimming pool and jacuzzi.  There’s also a sauna and steam room and you can complete the pampering with a massage.  Reception and the Concierge are on duty 24 hours a day to help you out with anything else you might need.

Guest rooms

This is a huge hotel with 790 rooms altogether.   You can choose from a standard guest room, deluxe room, executive room, suite or family room.  There are single and twin guest rooms available at the standard level.  Even these have floor to ceiling windows and a full en suite with bath and shower.  They come with a hairdryer and iron and tea and coffee making facilities.  You can kick back and relax in front of the cable TV and be entertained by the movies or video game.  Some of the guest rooms have views of the lake.  Deluxe rooms are 21 metres square and has a separate area for working. They have a few additional facilities like a trouser press and are available as a Queen or Twin.

Executive rooms are even bigger – 24 metres square, with a separate seating area and a bigger, flashier TV.  Staying in one of these also grants you access to the Executive Lounge, where you can pick up free drinks and refreshments. The Suites are of course the most luxurious options, with 66 metres of space, including a separate dining area and extra touches like bathrobes and refrigerators.  Family rooms are 23 metres square with a separate seating area.  They have a queen size bed and rollaway beds suitable for 2 small children. Cots can be put into the rooms if necessary.  Children under 5 sharing with 2 adults can stay and eat at the Hilton absolutely free.  Children between 5 and 15 get free accommodation in their parents’ room, although their meals are charged.  Any child 15 or under staying in his or her own room gets 50% off the room rate.   There’s internet access in all rooms except single rooms.  The rooms on the ground floor have WiFi access, which is charged at £10 for 24 hours.  The other rooms have wired broadband access, which costs £15 for 24 hours (May 2010).

Accessibility

There are accessible bedrooms at the Hilton with lower fixtures and fittings.  All public areas of the hotel such as the restaurant and bar are wheelchair accessible.  There are blue badge parking spaces outside.

Directions

If you’re coming by car from the M42 Southbound, exit at junction 6 and bear left at the fork in the road. At the roundabout take the first exit onto Eastway. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Pendigo Way. When you come to another roundabout take the first exit onto Harbet Drive and you will have arrived at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. If you’re coming Northbound on the M42, exit at junction 6 and bear right as the road forks. At the following 3 roundabouts take the second exit onto South way, turn right onto Pendigo Way and then take the first exit onto Harbet Drive, where you will find the hotel.

Airport views

There aren’t any views of the airport from the Hilton, which is an off-site hotel.
